Common no solo es el rapero que más liricismo imprime a sus letras o el emcee con la voz más reconocible de toda la escena americana. También es, quizá, uno de los artistas más mimados por la crítica especializada (nada que objetar) y más infravalorado a nivel de público, medios y ventas, que, a fin de cuentas, es lo que da de comer. Todo esto pareció cambiar con el éxito que supuso "Be" producido íntegramente por el difunto Jay Dee y por ese genio, John Coltrane o Al Green moderno que es Kanye West (éste si que es "el hombre orquesta" y no...ejem...) y con su último lanzamiento, "Finding forever". En estos dos álbumews encontramos al mismo Common de siempre, pero producido por un hombre que está en la cresta de la ola del hype, Mr. West (wake up Mr. West!).
El disco en el que me centro hoy, es, quizá el LP más discutido de Common. Puede que sea el que más ha dividido a la crítica, para muchos una obra maestra de ingenio, de amplitud de miras y de incomensurable capacidad creativa. Para otros, una excentricidad, algo demasiado místico, quizá demasiado influenciado por la también excéntrica Erikah Badu (su pareja por aquél entonces).
Lo cierto es que Badu aparece en cada corte del disco, pero esto no hace sino, en mi opinión, resaltar la calidad de la obra. Además, qué se puede esperar de un disco que ha sido concebido casi en su totalidad por Erikah Badu y Jay Dee. Pues clase, mucha clase. Y un hito en la música moderna. Se que es el típico ejemplo de álbum que ira siendo redescubierto por generaciones posteriores y acabará convirtiendose en disco de culto. Si no, al tiempo.
